The proposed Law on Fair Representation has officially reached the North Macedonian Parliament, sparking sharp criticism from the opposition. Rina Ajdari, an MP from the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), characterized the legislation as a "political experiment" rather than a substantive legal measure during a recent television appearance.

Ajdari emphasized that the proposed bill lacks the necessary legal weight to address the vacuum left by the Constitutional Court's 2024 abolition of the "Balancer." The Balancer was previously used to ensure equitable ethnic representation in public sector hiring.

Key concerns raised by the opposition include:

  • Lack of Sanctions: Ajdari pointed out that the new law fails to include enforcement mechanisms or sanctions, rendering it ineffective at guaranteeing fair representation.
  • Erosion of Rights: The MP further warned that the current government is exhibiting clear tendencies toward dismantling the principles of the 2001 Ohrid Framework Agreement.

The debate highlights the deepening political divide in North Macedonia regarding the protection of ethnic community rights following the removal of established administrative oversight tools.
