The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Portuguese Republic have officially signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, aiming to bolster ties and exchange expertise in key legal areas.

The memorandum was signed by Portugal’s Prosecutor General, Amadeu Guerra, and North Macedonia’s Public Prosecutor, Nenad Saveski. A formal exchange of the documents took place in Skopje during a high-level visit by the Deputy Prosecutor General of Portugal, Paulo Jorge Vieira Morgado de Carvalho, with Minister of Justice Igor Filkov in attendance.

Strategic Objectives

This partnership establishes a structured framework for long-term collaboration, including:

  • Professional Development: Joint training programs, seminars, and workshops for prosecutors.
  • Operational Exchange: Sharing technical information and operational experiences between specialized units.
  • Modernization: Implementing best practices in institutional management, human resources, and digital technologies.

Focusing on Critical Threats

The cooperation prioritizes the fight against several pressing criminal challenges, specifically organized crime, corruption, cybercrime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and money laundering.

"The memorandum will provide us with invaluable insight into the experience of an European Union member state," stated Prosecutor Saveski.

Strengthening Public Communication

The Portuguese delegation, which also includes advisor David Alexandrino Paulo Albuquerque e Aguilar, is currently in Skopje for a two-day visit. Their agenda includes participation in the conference, "From Strategy to Practice: Strengthening the Communication of the Public Prosecutor’s Office with the Public."

Supported by the EU support for rule of law project, this initiative follows the recent development of a new communication strategy for the North Macedonian prosecution office, further aligning its practices with international standards.
