The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has officially escalated the controversy surrounding the inaugural "FIFA Peace Award" granted to U.S. President Donald Trump. In a formal request submitted to the FIFA Ethics Committee, the NFF is seeking a thorough investigation into whether FIFA President Gianni Infantino violated the governing body's statutes regarding political neutrality.

The Controversy

The award was presented by Infantino to Trump during the World Cup draw on December 6, 2025. Since that event, FIFA has faced significant criticism for failing to disclose the selection criteria for the prize. Shortly after the ceremony, the human rights organization FairSquare filed a complaint, alleging that the move compromised FIFA’s mandated political impartiality.

Push for Accountability

NFF President Lise Klaveness has taken a leading role in demanding transparency. While other football associations have reportedly expressed support for the Norwegian stance, Klaveness clarified that the NFF is pursuing this action independently.

"We have received support from other associations, but we are sending this letter ourselves," Klaveness stated. She added that the federation concluded that exerting overt pressure would be counterproductive, noting that such approaches would likely "create friction" rather than foster constructive reform.

Governance Concerns

The NFF's request centers on the intersection of football governance and global politics. By seeking an ethics review, the NFF aims to compel FIFA to justify the award and ensure that future recognitions adhere to strict neutrality protocols to protect the integrity of the sport's governing body.
