TIRANA — In a significant diplomatic move aimed at diversifying its international partnerships, Albanian President Bajram Begaj has conducted a high-profile official visit to Saudi Arabia.
The state visit, which coincided with the annual Eid al-Adha and Hajj celebrations, is being widely interpreted by foreign policy experts as a signal of warming relations between Tirana and Riyadh.
High-Level Engagements in Riyadh
President Begaj attended the prestigious state ceremony as a personal guest of the Saudi leadership. The annual event, hosted by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, is one of the Kingdom's most significant diplomatic gatherings, bringing together global leaders, diplomats, and international figures.
A key highlight of the visit was a high-level meeting between President Begaj and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman during an official dinner held for visiting dignitaries. The interaction provided an opportunity for both leaders to discuss bilateral cooperation and explore avenues for deeper engagement.
A "360-Degree" Foreign Policy
According to Albert Rakipi, Chairman of the Albanian Institute for International Studies and former Deputy Foreign Minister of Albania, the visit carries profound strategic weight despite its religious backdrop.
"The visit is very important for Albania’s relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a strategically important country not only in the Middle East, but also as a leading state in the Arab and Muslim world," Rakipi noted.
He added that the meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the architect of Saudi Arabia's modernizing Vision 2030, represents a crucial milestone in bilateral ties.
The invitation extended to President Begaj is seen as a clear acknowledgment of Albania's growing international profile. Over the past few years, Tirana has actively pursued a "360-degree" foreign policy, seeking to build robust partnerships with key players in the Gulf region while maintaining its core Euro-Atlantic commitments.
