Addressing supporters at the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party (PS) of Tirana, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that the party's primary mission is the long-term development of the country. He underscored that the focus must remain on creating a better Albania for future generations.
Distancing from the Veliaj Case
Rama addressed the elephant in the room regarding the status of the imprisoned former Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj. He made it clear that the Socialist Party is not involved in seeking his release.
"We are not here to seek the release of the prisoner Erion Veliaj, because this is not our issue," Rama declared. "No matter how unfair it may seem to us, we are here to leave our children a different Albania."
Historical Parallels and Stability
To frame his vision for the party, the Prime Minister drew a comparison to former Prime Minister Fatos Nano. He praised Nano's approach following his own release from prison years ago, noting that Nano chose the path of reconciliation and institutional building over destructive conflict.
"Fatos Nano reached out to his captors without ever opening the floodgates for the socialists to drown Albania again, instead creating the conditions for us to be where we are today," Rama said.

Concluding his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized that Albania currently faces a critical juncture. He framed the political landscape as a choice between the weight of the past and the potential of the future, urging party members to maintain their focus on national progress.
