PRISTINA, Kosovo — Political analyst and professor Gazmend Shala has launched a scathing critique of the current government, characterizing the nation’s political climate as an "electoral autocracy." In a recent public statement, Shala argued that the administration is centralizing power in a manner reminiscent of the communist era.
Comparisons to the Past
Shala expressed deep concern over the centralization of decision-making processes, claiming that the current executive branch bypasses institutional checks and balances. He explicitly drew parallels between contemporary governance and the methods employed during the regime of Enver Hoxha.
"We are witnessing a consolidation of power that undermines democratic foundations, where decisions are made unilaterally, echoing the authoritarian practices of the past," Shala stated.
Concerns for the Future
Critics of the current administration have increasingly used the term "electoral autocracy" to describe a system where elections still occur, but the ruling party uses state resources and institutional control to stifle meaningful opposition. Shala’s comments have reignited the debate surrounding the health of Kosovo's democratic institutions and the transparency of its governance.
