UNESCO experts are preparing for an inspection mission in the Ohrid and Struga region, likely scheduled for June 12–14. The visit aims to address ongoing concerns regarding the impact of planned infrastructure projects on the area's UNESCO-protected heritage status.
At the center of the debate is the Trebenishta–Qafë-Thanë highway. The original proposed route for this project has faced significant opposition due to its planned path through sensitive archaeological sites, including the internationally recognized Iron Age necropolis at Trebenishta.
Government Proposes Route Revisions
Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikolloski confirmed that the government is exploring an alternative route via Podmolje. This proposal seeks to utilize existing infrastructure corridors, a strategy that aligns more closely with UNESCO’s rigorous preservation guidelines.
- Original Plan: A closed-system highway from Trebenishta to Qafë-Thanë.
- New Proposal: A re-routed path through Podmolje, which would also improve connectivity for the city of Struga.
Minister Nikolloski emphasized that the government is committed to both regional development and the protection of historical sites. He noted that the Ministry of Transport is currently coordinating with other government bodies to prepare for the upcoming UNESCO mission, ensuring all technical recommendations are thoroughly reviewed.
