North Macedonia has officially launched a restructured state graduation examination (matura) system for 2026. This year, for the first time, the process is divided into three distinct categories: state matura, state vocational matura, and state arts matura.

More than 14,000 students are set to begin the first external exam this Saturday. The State Examination Center (DIC) has confirmed that all logistical preparations, including the secure distribution of test materials to centers nationwide, are complete.

Daniela Jovčevska Mihajlovska, Director of the DIC, emphasized that the change is a significant step forward for the educational system. "The programs between gymnasiums and vocational schools differ in specific segments," she explained. "Previously, we had to attempt a cross-section of curricula, but now each type of education has its own dedicated exam program. This ensures students are tested strictly on what they have learned over the past four years."

Participation statistics highlight the breadth of the new system:

  • State Matura: Over 12,000 students
  • State Vocational Matura: Over 2,000 students
  • State Arts Matura: 127 students

To manage the logistics, the DIC has deployed approximately 2,500 testers, maintaining a ratio of one tester per 15 students. The process is further supported by over 200 observers stationed at various testing sites, which include school sports halls and university amphitheaters.

Authorities have issued a stern warning regarding exam integrity. Electronic devices are strictly prohibited, and officials have promised the "strictest penalties" for any violations. This focus on discipline is intended to prevent the irregularities seen in previous years, specifically the use of unauthorized messaging groups to cheat during exams.
