A significant seismic event occurred off the coast of Southern Italy early Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The earthquake, recorded at a magnitude of 6.2, struck near the region of Calabria.
Despite the high magnitude, Italian civil protection authorities have confirmed that there is no impact on the surface. The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 245 kilometers below the seabed.
Key Facts:
- Location: Off the coast of Calabria, approximately 38 km west of Cosenza.
- Depth: 243–247 kilometers.
- Impact: No structural damage, injuries, or fatalities have been reported.
Because of the extreme depth, the energy released by the tremor was largely dissipated before it could reach populated areas. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, but no emergency rescue operations were required.
