SKOPJE, North Macedonia — A traffic accident at an unofficial pedestrian crossing near the bustling Bit Pazar market has prompted renewed outrage from local residents. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has highlighted the persistent dangers faced by citizens navigating one of the city's most congested transit zones.
A Persistent Safety Hazard
For years, pedestrians have been forced to cross the busy thoroughfare at non-designated points due to the lack of infrastructure. Residents argue that the current layout is inadequate for the high volume of foot traffic generated by the market, leading to frequent near-misses and, as seen this week, preventable accidents.
"We cannot wait for another tragedy. It is time for the city to acknowledge the reality of how people move through this space and provide a safe, legal crossing," stated a local shopkeeper.
Calls for Urban Planning Reform
Citizens are now demanding immediate action from municipal authorities to formalize the crossing. The consensus among the local community is that installing proper signals and marked pedestrian paths is no longer a luxury, but a necessity to ensure public safety in the heart of Skopje.
