Canada is cementing its role as a pragmatic partner in Albania’s development through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). By prioritizing small-scale, locally-driven projects over top-down interventions, the program targets specific community needs with high-impact results.
Typically providing between CAD 15,000 and 60,000, CFLI projects are designed to deliver measurable improvements within a year. Recent initiatives highlight the program's focus on democratic governance, human rights, and sustainable economic growth.
Empowering Rural Communities
In the Municipality of Bulqizë, a partnership with the Association for Sustainable Rural Development has transformed the lives of 40 women herb collectors. By transitioning from informal practices to standardized, market-oriented handling of medicinal plants, these women have gained collective bargaining power and direct access to buyers.
Digital Safety and Inclusion
In northern Albania, the Albanian Women Empowerment Network led efforts in Kukës, Tropojë, and Burrel to bolster digital literacy. The project equipped participants with essential tools to navigate online spaces safely, effectively countering risks like cyberbullying. In Burrel, the initiative spurred long-term youth engagement, with students continuing to advocate for online safety through school media.
Supporting Marginalized Youth
Canada has also collaborated with STREHA to improve support mechanisms for sexual and gender minority youth. By training police, judges, and healthcare workers, the project has fostered a more responsive and inclusive environment for vulnerable individuals across the country.
