The Palace of Congresses in Tirana is set to undergo a significant transformation. On June 2, 2026, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the launch of an international architectural competition to revitalize the landmark, citing the need to address structural challenges while preparing the building for its future role.
Preserving Heritage, Embracing Modernity
The initiative seeks to modernize the facility while maintaining its historical architectural identity. According to government officials, the project is designed to balance the preservation of the building's legacy with the demands of contemporary infrastructure and technology.
"The Palace of Congresses will be transformed into a new tourist, cultural, and social destination for Tirana, meeting all modern global standards," stated Prime Minister Rama.
Key Project Objectives
- Structural Remediation: Addressing critical structural issues that have emerged over time.
- Multifunctional Hub: Creating a dynamic space that serves as a focal point for high-level national and international events.
- Urban Integration: Better connecting the facility to the surrounding urban fabric of the capital to encourage greater public interaction.
Five international architectural firms have been invited to submit conceptual proposals. The government aims to ensure that the final design elevates the building into a strategic asset for the city, enhancing both its utility and its appeal to visitors.
